Curriculum
Common Core is a list of skills that every student will be taught, broken down by grade level and subject. You can view the list here. http://www.corestandards.org/
Language Arts / Reading:
The adopted curriculum used is Houghton Mifflin. During the year students will participate in Response to Instruction, RTI. All RTI classes will have the same focus for that week with the approach to teaching the focus varying on the needs of the students. Students will participate in a variety of activities to access the curriculum including Literature Circles and in class projects. We will also be piloting new curriculum in my class this year. We will be using McGraw Hill.
Language Arts / Writing:
Our curriculum will focus on these genres as well as research reports. In fourth grade we use a combination of programs, Step-Up to Writing, 6-traits Writing and Writers Workshop. Step-Up to Writing focuses on structure and organization. 6- Traits Writing focuses on organization, voice, ideas, word choice, sentence fluency, and writing conventions. Writers Workshop focuses on the format for teaching writing with many small mini lessons refining a work.
Math:
This year the district has implemented a new curriculum, Eureka Math. This curriculum is closely related to Engage NY. It's new way of learning and teaching math for us, so we will be working through the challenge together. There are many resources out there and I will post tips or resources on my website as we go along.
Science:
The adopted curriculum is Foss Science. This is a hands-on, experiment-based curriculum. The STAR test given to fifth graders covers standards taught in fourth and fifth grade (this will be changing in the next year or two. More information to come). 5th grade science includes Mixtures and Solutions, Water Planet and Life Science.
Social Studies:
The adopted curriculum is Harcourt Reflections. We also use History Alive has a supplement. Throughout the year students will be learning about U.S. history, studying state and capital names. Many of the lesson through History Alive are hands-on and/or interactive.
Technology:
We have 1:1 Chromebooks in our class. Students will be using the Chromebooks and a handful of iPads every day for instruction, independent work and technology-based projects.
Art:
We are extremely lucky to have Art Vistas and our Clay program run by our fantastic parent volunteers.
Physical Education:
We are working with a new PE program this year called Recess 101. You can read more about it here.
